Heart & Heritage Backstage at SAFW
Followers of the blog will know that I have a lot of love for South African fashion brand, Heart & Heritage. Since I discovered this beautiful designer at Convoy in Melville, I’ve been more than a little obsessed with the beautiful, feminine, and flattering styles of H&H pieces, and just how lovely they make me feel every time I wear them. So you can imagine how incredibly happy I was to get to meet the H&H designer, Lesley, and then grow to become friends with her too. Lesley is incredible – I’m a little bit in love with her, too. Smart, hilarious, driven, and crazy talented, Lesley is clearly going to go very far – in April of this year she was the winner of SA Fashion Week’s ‘Lufthansa’s 1st Best Collection,’ an incredible acknowledgement of her beautiful work. So to celebrate her second Fashion Week show, Lesley invited me to hang out with her backstage to get a closer look at what goes on behind the scenes when putting together a killer show at Fashion Week. Here’s my look at Heart & Heritage Backstage at SAFW AW17.
It’s been a while since I’ve spent any real time behind the scenes at Fashion Week. When I was working in magazines in London I was lucky enough to spend some time backstage doing interviews and such, but that was a few years ago now and I’d forgotten how crazy hectic things get backstage. Designers, models, dressers, showcallers, makeup artists, hair stylists, photographers, journalists, and a about a million other people are all running around trying to make sure everything goes smoothly. It’s intense.
But, it’s also kinda incredible. There’s a tangible sense of excitement in the air, and the creativity is almost thick on your skin. I love it – if you can manage not to get in anyone’s way, it’s always pretty awesome.
It was especially special to be there with Heart & Heritage, too. As someone who wears a white t-shirt, a pair of black jeans, and sneakers 99.9% of the time, I clearly value comfort, and these clothes honestly feel amazing while also looking stylish and being crazy versatile. The new collection is full of surprising and enchanting details – a sequinned bow here, a splash of copper paint there. I cannot wait for these clothes to hit the rails so that I can buy them ALL and wear them all the damn time.
Congratulations to my amazing friend Lesley on an absolutely incredible collection, and thank you for letting me basque in the wonderful glow of your success. It’s always an honour to wear your clothes and work with you.
