I love my SA – and so does BIC

It’s funny – as I’m getting older (chill guys, I’m only 25) certain sayings and cliche’s suddenly snap into understanding in my brain. You hear things all the time (and you probably see them on Pinterest boards, too) but it’s not until they make sense in your own life that you understand why they’re cliche’s in the first place – the thing about cliche’s is that, alarmingly, they’re often true. For me, the cliche that came into focus as being hugely relevant in my life recently is that you really don’t know what you have until it’s gone. As a bright and shiny 18 year old (okay, maybe not so shiny – I hadn’t discovered the wonders of hair oil yet) I packed by bags and left the country where I’d lived my entire life to go after other things in the Northern Hemisphere. Don’t get me wrong – I had so much love for this beautiful place, but it was only through living somewhere else for a solid five years that I began to truly appreciate just how amazing South Africa is. The people, the atmosphere, the landscapes, the architecture – there’s no end to the incredible things I see around me on a daily basis. So, when I came home, it was with these giant eyes open to the world and with a passion that could only have come from being deprived from it’s beauty for so long.

With all of this in mind, it’s no real surprise that I get super super super amped when I get to work with brands that are just as excited about SA as I am. Over the weekend, I got to go on a little Instawalk with BIC to celebrate their new ‘Love Your SA’ campaign – I mean, the name of the campaign already got me all psyched up: loving SA is something I’m trying to spread all over the damn space. I took a few pictures of my own which you can see below – aren’t you amazed by how incredible our country is? The campaign is focused around celebrating the uniqueness of this country, and most excitingly, it’s about sharing your love for SA with them, too.

Above and beyond just spreading the love and encouraging you to open your eyes to the amazing place you’re in, you can also use this as an opportunity to make a little cash and get a little famous. To help celebrate SA, BIC are asking you to upload all your unique pictures of SA onto the ilovemybic.co.za microsite, and you could win R5,000 and have your photo (and your IG handle – HELLO FAME) onto thousands of BIC lighters. Which means that all of your friends (and your granny and your boss and that dude who made your life hell in high school) will be walking around with an iconic BIC lighter in their pocket, emblazoned with a picture that you took. Is that not the coolest thing ever?! I’m definitely gonna be trying my own hand at getting some pics submitted. Remember that they’re not looking for the recognisable views of your home though – so think outside the box, open your eyes to new things, and come up with some unique images that represent that real SA that you love.

So head on over to the microsite, submit your favourite SA pictures, and then head out and take some more – there’s no limit to the number of times you can enter. If you upload any pics to Instagram (and please do – I want to see them!) please use the hashtags #BICLoveYourSA and #LoveSA. You’ve got until August 31st, so I’m giving you lots of time to get the photos up.

Thank you BIC for this awesome spread of love, and for supporting Lucy Sarah. And thank you Angie my best for taking this beaut photo of me.
