UCOOK

I’ve been so quiet. The thing is, things have been a little insane lately. I wish I could show you what the last few weeks have been like. You know those theme park rides where you get spun around and around, and it presses you up against the sides? So the last few weeks have been a bit like being on one of those, and trying to juggle. That’s the closest to what the past few weeks have been like, trying to keep all my balls in the air (cheeky.) Between moving house, taking on new work, travelling to the UK (and Norway), plus Ant (and then me!) getting sick, it was a good idea to take a little step back and get everything nicely in order. Anyway, all that moaning aside, I’m back and I have so much lovely stuff to share with you – the first of which is my absolute favourite new discovery, UCOOK.

As you can imagine, during times when I’m stressed and have a lot going on, literally the last thing I wanna think about is what I’m going to make for dinner. I get it, many people use cooking as a way of relaxing, but that’s never really been my thing, baking is far closer to my heart when I’m looking for something to chill me out. So, when I was working with UCOOK for one of my newspaper pieces, I loved the concept and couldn’t wait to try it myself.

The idea is simple: you sign up for UCOOK’s dinner kits, which are then delivered to you the following week with all the ingredients ready to go in the perfect quantities, along with the recipe. The kit comes with enough food for three different dinners, and you can choose from a box for one (at R234), for two (at R438), or for four people (at R612) for the week. Which means that the meals work out at between R51 and R78 per serving – which if you ask me is pretty damn reasonable for what you’re getting.

The box is delivered straight to your door in a refrigerated container, and each ingredient is specially packaged in the perfect amount for you to get cooking. So rather than having to sit and ho-hum about what to cook tonight, all the ingredients and the recipe are right there in front of you. AND IT’S SUPER EASY GUYS.

The menu options change each week, so you’re constantly being introduced to new ingredients, new flavours, and new ideas. When you order, you can choose from three different menu types: Rustic, Low Carb, or Vegetarian. So even if you’re a bit of a banter or a veggie, there’s something delicious for you to chow down on.

I was really excited about receiving my first box, and I was so convinced that I’ve ordered two more since then. One of my favourite things about UCOOK is that the recipes, which might be new to you, open your brain up to a whole bunch of new ideas for cooking at home. Ant and I have actually even tried to recreate some of the recipes because we loved them so much.

We went for the low carb option, and for our first meal we received Sticky Asian Chicken. Ridiculously easy to make, and super fast, this meal did not disappoint, and the portion sizes are major. There was enough left over for Ant to take some to work for lunch the next day. A definite winner.

A couple nights later, we treated ourselves to the Tandoori Eland Rump. If I’m honest, I don’t think I’ve ever eaten Eland in my life, let alone cooked it. But it was super easy to make, and again, incredibly tasty. Move over chicken and lamb, Lucy’s got a new champion. Plus the coleslaw that accompanied it was a recipe I hope to steal and repeat many many times in the future.

Lastly, we were given Breakfast For Dinner. And I’ll be honest, I wasn’t super impressed by this option at first – I mean, I can make eggs and bacon, right? But as soon as we started putting the meal together, it was pretty clear that the only thing this AMAZING meal and a full English have in common is that they both feature bacon and eggs. From the sweet potato base to the fried sage leaves (#LIFECHANGING) this meal totally won me over. My definitive favourite from the week.

At the end of the week, I was feeling pretty sad about the four nights a week where I DON’T have a UCOOK box. Since then, we’ve tried a whole bunch of other meals, and I can honestly say that we’ve yet to have a bad one.

Another thing I love about UCOOK, besides from the obvious delicious food and convenience, is that it’s pushing me to get out of my comfort zone a little as a cook, and try new things. Last night I made the most incredible white wine risotto with pork loin, and this is coming from a girl who hasn’t made risotto EVER. Even Ant was impressed.

If you’re not already convinced about UCOOK (seriously, what’s wrong with you?) when spending a couple of minutes on their website is enough to win you over. I think I feel so passionate about the business that UCOOK has built because their philosophy is all about ethical, organic, local food – so everything that arrives at your door (and then on your plate) has been sourced with the environment in mind. So, not only do you not have to feel guilty about not thinking up something new and amazing for dinner, you dont have to feel guilty about the new and amazing meal you end up eating.

Even if you don’t plan on ordering a UCOOK box every week, it’s a fantastic resource to know – maybe you’ve got a particularly crazy week coming up, or you know you’ll be working late for a couple weeks. Just make sure you pop your order in with them by noon on Wednesday, and everything will arrive at your door the following Monday.

Thank you to UCOOK for supporting Lucy Sarah – keep your eyes open for some exciting UCOOK news here soon!
